Be sure to check our classroom page on a regular basis to keep up with what’s happening in ROOM 113.
Remember that we have gym every Thursday and the children need to wear their blue Jamieson t-shirts. Also, please be sure to send a nutritious snack each day in your child’s backpack.
We’re off to a great start with 3 returning students – Christopher, Julian and Aboud. No new students as of yet but hopefully we’ll get a few new additions soon. This year we will have both a prekindergarten and kindergarten level in our classroom. Christopher is in the kindergarten group and Julian & Aboud are in the PreK group. I seperate the 2 groups for math and reading but work with the whole group for everything else.
In math this week, the prek group will work on the 10 basic colors – red, yellow, blue, green, pink, purple, orange, brown, black, & white. In reading, we’ll read a book called Muffins which will help us listen for the sound made by the letters Mm. Mm vocabulary will include mother, muffins, marshmellows, mixer, mat, milk, mug, etc…
The kindergarten group will also be working on the #’s 1-5 in math as well as the concepts of volume, patterns and beginning coin recognition. In reading, we’ll introduce the concept of how a community helps each other by reading Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip. We’ll discuss new vocabulary words – bakery, baker, post office, mail carrier. fire station, firefighter, library, librarian, park, chaperone. We’ll work on the letters Ss, Tt, & Uu and the sounds they make and we’ll review all the words in our word bag.
In language/science we are continuing to learn about “Pumpkins”. Concepts we are working on include how a pumpkin grows (life cycle) and how they vary in size, color and purpose. We will also learn about the parts of a pumpkin. Vocabulary from this unit includes – seed, dirt, soil, pumpkin, vine, blossom, flower, shoot, sprout, skin, stem, pulp, etc…
During group reading time we are reading Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom and doing several ABC activities. We are also reading a variety of pumpkin related books. If anyone would like the titles, let me know, and I’ll send you a list.
In group writing time, we work in our journals and practice writing our letters and names. Soon we’ll begin “Writer’s Workshop” and be writing our own stories.
