Homework Policy room 201
Please check your child’s assignment notebook on a daily basis for a list of their homework, spelling words, and announcements. I will also be updating my webpage. Homework is a review of what we worked on that week and a large part of your child’s final grade. Please make sure homework is completed every night. If it is not completed, I do accept late homework, but it does pile up quickly.
Routines room 201
Students are required to work in groups during Language Arts, while I read with small groups of students to help them improve their fluency and comprehension. During this time, it is crucial that students are working “on task” on their assigned activity. My goal is for students to view their classroom as a community of learners and to work cooperatively with one another. I will be sending their Learning Center work home weekly to be signed by a parent and returned so students understand the importance of working “on task” during Learning Center time.
Spelling tests are given weekly. Students are required to write the weekly spelling words in their assignment notebook. You can find the spelling word list in the link below. The current spelling word list is under the current story of the week.
Science and Social Studies are interchanged. Once we have reviewed the chapter and students have taken the chapter test, then I begin with the other subject.
Math is taught every day. I work with students who are having difficulty on a particular skill after the lesson is taught. I also have students who have mastered a particular skill work with students who need a little extra help.
Language Arts is taught every day. There is a story of the week, which students read along to with the CD to improve their fluency, practice book pages, which include vocabulary, and comprehension strategies that is completed in class, a vocabulary graphic organizer, the story scavenger hunt, and learning center activities. A test is given weekly based on the story of the week.
Response to Literature is assigned 2-3 times a week. This gives me the opportunity to assess whether students are able to connect to what they are reading and to make sure they are reading on a regular basis. Every week, students have the opportunity to check out books during Library class. They can also complete a Response to Literature using a Scholastic News article from our class.
