WELCOME TO ROOM 206!

I hope you had a relaxing summer.  As your science and homeroom language arts/reading teacher, I am looking forward to a new and challenging school year with you.  You are now intermediate students!  That title will bring more responsibility and hard work, but you can do it.  We will do it together.

      This year Room 206 will have Mrs. Osicka, our special needs teacher, working with us for extra support, as well as Mrs. DiMuzio, our classroom Seca.    We also have a new math teacher in Room 204, Mr. Colin Shevlin.  He will be joining the fourth grade team.  Let’s give him a warm welcome on September 4th.  Here’s to an exciting and very productive 2012-2013 school year!!!!

 

  

    What’s new for the week of May 20……

    This week in science we are beginning a chapter on Ecosystems.  We will start off Monday with an earthworm experiement!  In reading we will begin a story titled Lost City:  The Discovery of Machu Picchu. Our skill will focus on compare and contrast.
    Homework for Tuesday, May 21
    Reading – Workbook pages 213 and 214 on The Lost City.  Also continue work on your spelling unit.  Due tomorrow, three times each of the new spelling words.  No science homework.

    Homework for Monday, May 20th 
    Reading – Begin the new spelling packet on syllable patterns.  This is due on Thursday.  Don’t forget – your fantasy book report is due tomorrow.  Bring your paper bag with the summary and ingredients inside. 
    Science – Groups 2 and 3 – Write two columns on the paper.  List one column living and the other column non-living.  Analyze the habitat picture and find all living and non-living items and place them in the correct column.  Group 1 – Read the article on ecosystems and answer the back page.
     

    What’s new for the week of May 13, 2013….

    This week in science we will wrap up Chapter 2 on plants, culminating with the chapter test on Wednesday.  In reading we are reading a nonfiction journal entry called Antarctic Journal.  We will revisit the skill of main idea and details.

    Reading – Workbook pages 239 and 240 on informational text.  Also read and complete the worksheet reviewing main idea and details.  Don’t forget– your fantasy book report is due on Tuesday, the 21st.  Science – 8 vocabulary definitions due on Monday.

    Reading – Reread Antarctic Journal – Answer Reader’s Response on p. 602; answer all the questions on the page.  Study for the spelling test. 
    Science – On   the paper provided, look up and write the definitions for the 8 new vocabulary words for Chapter 3.  Include a picture for the word.  This is due on Monday.

    Reading – Workbook pages 237 and 238; finish spelling unit; Also write 10 spelling sentences.  No science homework due to the test.

    Reading – Workbook pages 233-234; begin work on the new spelling packet which is due on Thursday. Science – Workbook p. 13 on chapter vocabulary.
     

    What’s new for the week of May 6, 2013…..

    This week in science we will be working on seeds growing into new plants.  Today we opened peanuts and examined them.  Tomorrow we will work on a bean seed germiniation activity.  We will not begin a new story in reading this week; instead we will focus on NWEA skills and vocabulary to get ready for next week’s test.

    Reading – Comprehension worksheets, (you may write on)  Also work on your fantasy book report due May 21. Science – Chapter review on pages 70-71.  Answer #1-8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15-18.  Group 1 is to also answer #20.

    Reading – Reading comprehension activity on informational text.  Answer the five questions; also write a summary of your favorite movie on the back.  Science – Group 2 and 3 are to complete the flip booklet on seed germination.  Group 1 is to complete the questions from Lesson 4.

    Reading – Two sided worksheet reviewing fact/fantasy and inference.  You may write on the sheet.  No science homework.

    Reading – Read the Scholastic News passed out.  Answer the back skills page; also respond to the Debate of the Week or the Sticky Situation.  Science – Illustrate and label diagrams of a monocot seed and a dicot seed.  Also write a definition of each type of seed.  All the information is on the paper provided for you. 
     

    What’s new for the week of April 29, 2013…..

    This week in science we will continue our chapter on plants.  On Friday we dissected a flower; this week we will examine seeds.  In reading we will be working on a fantasy story about the rain forest.

    Reading – Reading comprehension about Jackie Robinsion.  You may write on the sheet.  Also continue to read a fantasy book for the upcoming book report.  Science – Group 3 – Crossword puzzle on pollination; Groups 1 and 2 – Review questions on Lessons 1 and 2.  Have a good weekend!

    Reading – Reread the story The Great Kapok Tree.  Answer the Reader’s Respone on p. 378, all five questions.  Study for the spelling test.  Science – Group 1 questions due on Monday.  Groups 2 and 3 no homework.

    Reading – Complete spelling unit due tomorrow.  Also write 10 sentences.  Complete workbook pages 147 and 148 on generalizing.  Science – Group 2 has a crossword puzzle on pollination.  Groups 3 and 1 have no homework.

    Reading – Continue to work on spelling unit.  Also write your new words three times each.  Complete workbook pages 145 and 146 for our story.  No science homework.

    Reading – Begin the new spelling unit on possessives.  This is due on Thursday.  Workbook pages 143 and 144.  Also complete the vocabulary activity started today on the words from The Great Kapok Tree.

    What’s new for the week of April 22, 2013…..

    Happy Earth Day!  This week in science we will continue to work in Chapter 2 on plants.  We will focus on the parts of a plant, and how flowers reproduce.  In reading we are working with a photo essay titled Adelina’s Whales.  We are revisiting the skills of fact and opinion, as well as generalizing.

    Reading – Complete workbook pages 119-120 on finding information in periodicals.  No science homework. 
    Homework for Thursday, April 25, 2013
    Reading – Complete the trifold for Adelina’s Whales.  Reread the story for tomorrow’s selection test.  Also study for spelling test.  Science – Complete the plant booklet if not completed in class.  This will count as a project grade.

    Reading – Workbook pages 115-116; l write words 3x each of the new spelling packet.  Science – Answer Questions 1,2,3 on p. 53
    Homework for Monday, April 22, 2013 
    Reading – Read and answer the questions on Earth Day.  Begin the spelling unit which is due on Thursday.  In science, finish up your own litter bag for the family car.  This does not have to be brought in.  Reflect on Earth Day.
