Late-April:
-Reading- We continue reading The Outsiders. We are comparing biographies, autobiographies and other nonfiction selections.
-Science- We are going to “hopscotch” our way through the rest of the Environmental Science textbook. We will study different sections of Chapters 3-5.
Mid-April:
Reading- We have begun reading The Outsiders. We are reading nonfiction and working on skills.
Science: We are finishing Chapter 2, Sections 1-5, and about to take a test on it.
Late March:
Reading: Continue/Finish reading Witness. Begin Unit 3: Nonfiction selections.
Science: Landfill presentations/ simulation. Continue Chapter 2: Biomes, Biogeography, Land Uses, etc.
Middle of March:
Reading- we are beginning Unit 8 of Vocabulary. We will be starting a novel called “Witness.” We continue to study poems and their figurative language.
Science: we are reviewing for the test on Chapter 1: Sections 1-4 and Chapter: Section 1
Third week of February:
Reading: We are continuing to study figurative language and elements of poetry, as well as Extended Response.
Science: We are studying populaltions, communities, and means of determining population size.
Mid-February:
Reading: We will examing/enjoying poetry and learning about figurative language. We continue to improve on our Extended Response writing.
Science: Test on Chapter 1 will be Tuesday, February 14th. We’ll be finished with the Chemical Building Blocks Book and moving on to the Environmental Book.
Final week of January/Beginning of February:
Reading: We are studying the narrative poem, “The Highwayman.” We continue to enrich our Extended Responses by incorporating quotes from the selections. Unit 6 Vocabulary words like boisterous, compliant and partisan are our focus, but we are still reviewing Units 1-5.
Science: We are studying properties of matter, such as buoyancy, states of matter and density.
Fourth week of January:
Reading: We are studying irony. Unit 5 Vocabulary words like eerie, fidelity and in habitant are our focus, but we are still reviewing Units 1-4.
Science: We are still studying properties of matter, such as mass, volume, length and density.
Third week of January:
Reading: We are working on Extended Response. We are reviewing Units 1-5 Vocabulary.
Science: We are studying properties of matter, such as mass, volume, length, weight and density.
Second week of January:
Reading: We are studying stories from the oral traditions: myths, fables, etc. Unit 5 Vocabulary words like eerie, fidelity andinhabitant are our focus, but we are still reviewing Units 1-4.
Science: We are studying atoms, molecules, compounds and the Periodic Table of the Elements.
Second full week of December:
Reading: We are studying stories from the oral traditions: myths, fables, etc. Unit 4 Vocabulary words like reverie, ingratitude and plight are our focus, but we are still reviewing Units 1-3.
Science: Having traded in our Plant textbooks for Chemical Building Blocks, we are studying matter, its characteristics, and physical and chemical changes.
First full week of December:
Reading: We are studying the historical context in stories, and Possessive Pronouns. Both groups are finishing reading their novels, and writing an essay about the main character and whether or not they have changed. Unit 4 Vocabulary words like reverie, ingratitude and plight are our focus.
Science: We are almost finished with Chapter 5: Seedplants. Expect a test this Thursday; the students were told about it last week. Key Terms and notes will be used by the students for a short time during the test–so their notes should be organized and labelled.
End of November/ Beginning of December:
Reading: We are studying the influence of historical context in stories, and Subject/Verb agreement. Both groups are finishing reading their novels.
Science: We are studying the characteristics of angiosperms, and will be dissecting a flower this week. Expect a test next week on Chapter 5.
3rd week of November:
In Science: We are participating in the Science Fair!!!
In Reading: We continue to read our novels: either Stargirl of Montmorency. We are revisiting pronouns.
4th week of October/1st week of November:
In Science: We are turning in our rough draft of the Results. Continue working on the Science Fair Project. We are beginning to study characteristics of seed plants: Chapter 5- Sections 1 and 2.
In Reading: We continue to read our novels: either Stargirl of Montmorency. We are studying/ working on the Unit 3 vocabulary words. We will be comparing characters of different stories.
4th week of October:
In Science: We are turning in our rough draft of the Review of Literature. Continue working on the Science Fair Project. We are taking a test about photosynthesis and vascular plants: Chapter 4- Sections 1 and 2.
In Reading: We have begun the next novel: either Stargirl of Montmorency. We are studying/ working on the Unit 3 vocabulary words. We are comparing settings in a story or a book.
3rd week of October:
In Science: We are turning in our problem, hypothesis, materials, and procedures. We are working on centers to learn about photosynthesis, in different ways.
In Reading: We finished Seedfolks and are writing a new character chapter for the book. We are studying/ working on the Unit 1 and 2 vocabulary words. We have been comparing a work of fiction and nonfiction.
2nd week of October:
In Science: We are turning in science fair title pages and beginning to type up their problem, hypothesis, materials, and procedures.
In Reading: We are almost done with our second novel, Seedfolks and are working on the Unit 2 vocabulary words.
1st week of October:
In Science: We will begin to study the characteristics of plants and begin planning for the science fair workload
