This week we’ll be covering the following skills and concepts:
Reading
The PreK group is reading a book called Hungry and learning to discriminate the letter Hh in the initial position. Vocabulary will include – hen, horse, house, hug, hotdog, hamburger, heel, horn, heart, hammer, hose, hand, hat, etc…
The K group is reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears, another selection in our new unit called “Let’s Explore”. In this unit we’ll learn about where our daily adventures can take us and the things we can learn. We’ll explore the letter ”Gg” in the initial and final position and we’ll review the sight words “one”, “two”, “three”, “four”, and “five”. We’ll also be reviewing the concept of “characters” in a story as well as ”telling sentences” which we learned about earlier this year. Remember the students should be practicing the words in their word bags everyday and reading the books in their book borrowing folders.
Math
The PreK group will begin a unit on vocabulary, skills and concepts related to the numbers 1-5. We’ll use the one-to-one correspondence that helped us understand equal, more, & less to help us learn how to count correctly.
The K group is beginning a new unit on telling time. Vocabulary, skills and concepts will include long/minute hand, short/hour hand, #’s 1-12, second, minute, hour, analog, digital, a.m., p.m., o’clock, etc… This week we’re concentrating on telling time to the half-hour.
Science/Social Studies
We have started a unit on “Community Helpers”. The community helper we are learning about now is the mail carrier. Concepts and vocabulary will include mail, mail carrier, mailtruck, mailbox, job, stamp, envelope, address, street, post office, mailbag, etc… We should be wrapping this up this week and moving on to “firefighter”.
Group Reading
We’re reading several of the Dr. Suess books in preparation for our field trip as well as books related to our social studies topic. If anyone would like a list of the books let me know.
